Madai«/b» («u»Hebrew «/u»: , pronounced «u»[ma'da.i] «/u»; «u»Greek «/u»: «u» «/u») is a son of «u»Japheth «/u» and one of the 16 grandsons of «u»Noah «/u» in the \ul«i»Book of Genesis \ulnone«/i» of the «u»Hebrew Bible «/u». Biblical scholars have identified Madai with various nations, from the «u»Mitanni «/u» of early records, to the «u»Medes «/u» of much later records. The Medes, reckoned to be his offspring by «u»Josephus «/u» and most subsequent writers, were also known as «i»Madai«/i», including in both «u»Assyrian «/u» and «u»Hebrew «/u» sources. The «u»Kurds «/u» still maintain traditions of descent from Madai.
According to the \ul«i»Book of Jubilees \ulnone«/i» (10:35-36), Madai had married a daughter of «u»Shem «/u», and preferred to live among Shem's descendants, rather than dwell in Japheth's allotted inheritance beyond the Black Sea; so he begged his brothers-in-law, «u»Elam «/u», «u»Asshur «/u» and «u»Arphaxad «/u», until he finally received from them the land that was named after him, Media.
The Medes are thought by scholars to have been «u»Indo-Aryan «/u» peoples, while the Mitanni were an aristocracy from the «u»Araxes «/u» region who moved to Syria in the Bronze Age and superimposed themselves upon the «u»Hurrians «/u» there, adopting their language. In the oldest writings of the «u»Zoroastrian «/u» religion of the Medes«u»[1]«/u», the earliest homeland of the Aryan race had been a legendary place called "«u»Airyanem Vaejah «/u»" \emdash traditionally (eg., in the \ul«i»Bundahishn \ulnone«/i» 29:12) associated with «u»Arran «/u» and the valley of the Araxes river, which rises next to «u»Mount Ararat «/u».
Another line in «i»Jubilees«/i» (8:5) states that a daughter of Madai named «u»Milcah «/u» married «u»Cainan «/u», who is an ancestor of «u»Abraham «/u» also mentioned in older versions of Genesis.
«b»Madai«/b» is also the name of the deified ancestor of the «u»Kachin «/u», according to the indigenous Kachin religion. The Kachin are a people of «u»Myanmar «/u» and neighboring areas speaking a «u»Sino-Tibetan «/u» language.
