Kittim«/b» (or «b»Chittim«/b») in the genealogy of «u»Genesis 10 «/u» in the «u»Hebrew Bible «/u», is the son of «u»Javan «/u», the grandson of «u»Japheth «/u», and «u»Noah «/u»'s great-grandson.
The city of «u»Larnaca «/u», (Greek: Turkish: Larnaka) on the west coast of «u»Cyprus «/u», was known in ancient times as Kition, or (in Latin) Citium. On this basis, «u»Flavius Josephus «/u» (c. 100 AD) identified the Kittim with Cyprus, however the name seems to have been employed with some flexibility in «u»Hebrew literature «/u», and was sometimes used to apply to the «u»Romans «/u», «u»Macedonians «/u» or «u»Assyrians«/u». Some authors[«u»«i»citation needed «/u»«/i»] have speculated that it comes from an «u»Akkadian «/u» word meaning "invaders". Others (following «u»Max Muller «/u») have identified Kittim with the land of «u»Hatti «/u» (Khatti), as the «u»Hittite «/u» Empire was known.
According to «i»The Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible«/i», the name Kittim "is extended to include the W[est] in general, but esp[ecially] the seafaring W[est]."
The 'New International Version' Bible renders the expression "ships of Kittim" (appearing in the «u»Book of Daniel «/u» 11) as "ships of the western coastlands."
In the «u»«i»War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness «/u»«/i» from the «u»Dead Sea Scrolls «/u», the Kittim are referred to as being "of «u»Asshur «/u»".
The mediaeval rabbinic compilation «u»«i»Yosippon «/u»«/i» contains a detailed account of the Kittim. As the peoples spread out, it says, the Kittim camped in «u»Campania «/u» and built a city called "Posomanga", while descendants of «u»Tubal «/u» camped in neighboring «u»Tuscany «/u» and built "«u»Sabino «/u»", with the «u»Tiber «/u» river as their frontier. However, they soon went to war following the «u»rape of the Sabines «/u» by the Kittim. This war was ended when the Kittim showed the descendants of Tubal their mutual progeny. They then built cities called «u»Porto «/u», «u»Albano «/u», and Aresah. Later, their territory is occupied by Agnias, King of Carthage, but the Kittim end up appointing Zepho, son of «u»Eliphaz «/u» and grandson of «u»Esau «/u», as their king, with the title «u»Janus «/u» «u»Saturnus «/u». The first king of Rome, «u»Romulus «/u», is made in this account to be a distant successor of this line. A shorter, more garbled version of this story is also found in the later «u»«i»Sefer haYashar

«b»Essenes
«/b»The «u»Essenes «/u» community believed that the Kittim (or Kitti'im) referred to the Roman Empire. Many writings have been discovered throughout the Dead Sea Scrolls refering to the «i»Kitti'im«/i» with commentaries on the Law.
