«u»Tubal «/u»«/b», son of Japheth. He is connected with the «u»Tabali «/u», an Anatolian tribe, and both the Iberians of the Caucasus and those of the «u»Iberian peninsula «/u» (modern «u»Spain «/u» and «u»Portugal «/u»), as well as Illyrians and Italics. In the book of «u»Jubilees «/u» he was bequeathed the three 'tongues' of Europe.

      Tubal«/b», «u» IPA «/u» [ t ] or [ tu'bal ], "Thou shalt be brought", in «u»Genesis «/u» 10 (the «u»Table of Nations «/u»), was the name of a son of «u»Japheth «/u», son of «u»Noah «/u».
Many authors, following the Romanized Jewish author «u»Josephus «/u» (1st century AD), related the name to «i»Iber«/i». Concerning the question of the ethnic affinity of the population of Tubal, Josephus wrote: "Tobal gave rise to the «u»Thobeles «/u», who are now called Iberes". This version was repeated by Patriarch «u»Eustathius of Antioch «/u», Bishop «u»Theodoret «/u», and others. However, «u»Jerome «/u», «u»Isidore of Seville «/u», and the Welsh historian «u»Nennius «/u» stated another tradition that Tubal was ancestor to the «u»Iberians «/u», 'Italians' [i.e., Italic tribes] and 'Spanish' [who were also called «u»Iberians «/u»]. A divergent tradition recorded by «u»Hippolytus of Rome «/u» lists Tubal's descendants as the "Hettali".
According to «u»a Catalan legend «/u», Japheth's son Tubal is said to have sailed from «u»Jaffa «/u» with his family and arrived at the «u»Francolí «/u» river of Spain in 2157 BC, where he founded a city named after his son «i»Tarraho«/i», now «u»Tarragona «/u». He then proceeded to the «u»Ebro «/u» (like Iberia, named after his second son «i»Iber«/i»), where he built several more settlements, including «u»Amposta «/u». His third son's name is given as «i»Semptofail«/i». Noah himself is said to have visited them here about 100 years later. Tubal is said to have reigned for 155 years, until he died while preparing to colonize «u»Mauretania «/u» and was succeeded by Iber. Other traditions make Tubal son of Japheth (who is often confounded with «u»Tubal-Cain «/u» son of Lamech, a figure from before the flood) to be the founder of «u»Ravenna «/u» in Italy, «u»Setúbal «/u» in Portugal, and «u»Toledo «/u» and many other places in Spain. The earliest source for most of these legends seems to have been the «i»Pseudo-Berosus«/i» published by «u»Annio da Viterbo «/u» in 1498, now widely considered a forgery.
Basque intellectuals like «u»Poza «/u» (16th century) have named Tubal as the ancestor of «u»Basques«/u», and by extension, the «u»Iberians«/u». The French Basque author «u»Augustin Chaho «/u» (19th century) published «i»The Legend of Aitor«/i», asserting that the common patriarch of the Basques was «u»Aitor «/u», a descendant of Tubal.
The «u»Caucasian Iberians «/u» were ancestors of modern «u»Georgians«/u». Some modern Georgians also claim descent from Tubal, «u»Togarmah «/u» and «u»Meshech «/u»; a Georgian historian, «u»Ivane Javakhishvili «/u», considered «u»Tabal «/u», Tubal, Jabal and Jubal to be ancient Georgian tribal designations.
      The «u»Tabali «/u» («u»«i»Tibareni «/u»«/i» in «u»Greek «/u») were «u»Luwian «/u» tribes of «u»Asia Minor «/u» of the «u»3rd «/u»-«u»1st millennias BC «/u». They and other related tribes, the «i»Chalybes«/i» («u»Khalib «/u»/«u»Khaldi «/u») and the «u»Mossynoeci «/u» («i»Mossynoikoi«/i» in Greek), are sometimes considered the founders of «u»metallurgy «/u».
Tubal's sons are given different names in rabbinic sources. In «u»Pseudo-Philo «/u» (written c. AD 70), his son's names are «i»Phanatonova«/i» and «i»Eteva«/i», and they were given the land of "Pheed". The later mediaeval «u»«i»Chronicles of Jerahmeel «/u»«/i» gives these sons' names as «i»Fantonya«/i» and «i»Atipa«/i», and says they subdued "Pahath"; elsewhere these chronicles include information derived from Jerome, identifying Tubal's descendants with Iberia and Hispania. In still another place, the «i»Chronicles of Jerahmeel«/i» reproduces a more detailed legend taken from the earlier «u»«i»Yosippon «/u»«/i» (c. 950): Tubal's descendants, it says, camped in «u»Tuscany «/u» and built a city called "«u»Sabino «/u»", while the «u»Kittim «/u» built "Posomanga" in neighboring «u»Campania «/u», with the «u»Tiber «/u» river as the frontier between the two peoples. However, they soon went to war following the «u»rape of the Sabines «/u» by the Kittim. This war was ended when the Kittim showed the descendants of Tubal their mutual progeny. A shorter, more garbled version of this story from «i»Yosippon«/i» is also found in the later «u»«i»Book of Jasher «/u»«/i», known from c. 1625, which additionally names Tubal's sons as «i»Ariphi«/i», «i»Kesed«/i» and «i»Taari«/i».
The Arabic dictionary «i»Taj al-Arus«/i» by al-Zubaidi (1790) notes that although some Islamic authors make the «u»Khazars «/u» descendants of Japheth's son Khasheh (Meshech), others hold both the Khazars and «u»Saqaliba «/u» (Slavs) to have come rather from his brother, Tubal.«u»[1]«/u»
