«/b»The word «b»Dedan«/b» means "low ground". The people are called Dedanim or Dedanites.
In the «u»Bible «/u», it can refer to either:
      «tab» A son of «u»Raamah «/u» («u»Genesis «/u»10:7). His descendants are mentioned in «u»Isaiah «/u» 21:13 and «u»Ezekiel «/u» 27:15. They probably settled among the sons of «u»Cush «/u», on the north-west coast of the present «u»Persian Gulf «/u».
      «tab»A son of «u»Jokshan «/u», «u»Abraham «/u»'s son by «u»Keturah «/u» («u»1 Chronicles «/u» 1:32). His descendants settled on the «u»Syrian «/u» borders about the territory of «u»Edom «/u». They probably led a pastoral life.
      «tab»a city of «u»Arabia «/u», modern «u»Al-'Ula «/u».
«b»Dedan«/b» in the latter meaning is first mentioned in the «u»Book of Ezekiel «/u», (Chapters 27 and 38). Chapter 27 is a roster of the trading partners of the city of «u»Tyre «/u» (today in modern Lebanon), where «i»Dedan«/i» is noted as a nation or kingdom which traded in saddle blankets (Ezekiel 27:20).
The oasis kingdom is also mentioned in the prophetic vision of the war of «u»Gog and Magog «/u» (Ezekiel 38; see also, «u»Revelation «/u» 20:8), and appears to be a nation of significance in this end-times prophecy of Ezekiel.
In Ezekiel 38:13, «i»Dedan«/i» is joined with «u»Sheba «/u», and "«u»Tarshish «/u» and all her strong lions", all these nations joining together to inquire of the advancing armies of «u»Gog «/u»: "Have you come to plunder? Have you gathered your hordes to loot, to carry off silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods and to seize much plunder?"
Now known as «u»Al Ula «/u» in northern «u»Saudi Arabia «/u», known to the ancient «u»Greeks «/u» and «u»Romans «/u» as Hijra, Hegra or Egra, the former is about the same distance, about 250 miles north from «u»Medina «/u» as Medina is north of «u»Mecca «/u». The location where the extinct tribe of «u»Thamud«/u» used to dwell.
In the ruins of the old city there are inscriptions that indicate the Dedanites were preceded by a Minean settlement. The Mineans established a center at this desert oasis in order to protect the incense trade.
