Canaan«/b» is a Biblical figure who, according to the «u»Old Testament «/u», was the son of «u»Ham «/u» and the grandson of the patriarch «u»Noah «/u». The «u»«i»Book of Genesis «/u»«/i» states that the «u»Canaanites «/u», a people who mostly occupied modern-day «u»Israel «/u», were descendants of this Canaan. Canaan fathered the «u»Phoenicians «/u» through his son «u»Sidon «/u», and the «u»Hittites «/u» through his son «u»Heth «/u». The Bible also says that he fathered the «u»Jebusites «/u», «u»Hivites «/u», «u»Arkites «/u», «u»Girgashites «/u», «u»Zemarites «/u», «u»Amorites «/u», «u»Sinites «/u», «u»Arvadites «/u», and «u»Hamathites «/u».
In Genesis, Canaan was cursed by Noah because of his father's transgressions. This is referred to as the «u»Curse of Ham «/u».
However, according to the «u»«i»Book of Jubilees «/u»«/i», both the Israelite conquest of Canaan and the curse are attributed instead to Canaan's steadfast refusal to join his elder brothers in Ham's allotment beyond the «u»Nile «/u», instead "squatting" on the eastern shores of the «u»Mediterranean «/u», within the inheritance delineated for «u»Shem «/u».
The Persian historian «u»Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari «/u» (c. 915) recounts a tradition that the wife of Canaan was named Arsal, a daughter of Batawil son of «u»Tiras «/u», and that she bore him the "Blacks, Nubians, «u»Fezzan«/u», «u»Zanj «/u», «u»Zaghawah «/u», and all the peoples of the Sudan."
