«/b»of Flamborough and Holme, co.. York; the latter he sold in 1633, and the former to «b»Sir Henry Griffith«/b» in 1636. For his service under the «u»«b»Earl of Essex «/u»«/b» (A.D. 1599), in Ireland he received the honor of knighthood; and being involved in the subsequent proceedings of that nobleman, he was arraigned for high treason, but remanded without trial, on a special letter from the «u»«b»Queen«/u»«/b», that he and others were unwarily drawn in. On the 20 Mar following, he had her Majesty's warrant, to «u»«b»Sir John Popham, Knt, Lord Chief Justice «/u»«/b», to be admitted to bail. «b»Sir William«/b» was created a baronet by «b»King James I«/b», 29 Jun 1611, served in parliament, first for the borough of Knaresborough, and afterwards for the county of York, from 25 «b»James I«/b» to the time of his decease. He became a great advocate for the liberty of the subject, and being imprisoned on account of ship money, adopted a decided part against the «b»King«/b». He was a colonel in the Parliament army, and his name appears in the warrant for the execution of «b»King Charles«/b». He died during the usurpation, 15 Jun 1655, and thus escaped personally the resentment of the restored monarch, but his lands, &., were especially excepted in the general pardon, granted by «b»Charles II«/b», as likewise, all pains, penalties, and forfeitures, as though the Act of Grace had never passed. He died without surviving issue.
