Anna was a Greek princess, scholar, historian, physician, hospital administrator.
She wrote the «u»Alexiad «/u», an account of her father's reign, which is unique in that it was written by a princess about her father.
Anna was born in the Porphyra Chamber (the purple chamber) of the imperial palace of Constantinople and was thus a porphyrogenita . [ an honorific title given to a son, or daughter ( «b»«i»Porphyrogénn«/b»«/i», Latinized «b»«i»Porphyrogenita«/b»«/i»), of a reigning emperor in the Byzantine Empire . However, not every imperial prince or princess was accorded this distinction. There was a prescribed set of circumstances that had to be in place before this title could be granted.]

She notes her imperial heritage in the «i»Alexiad«/i» by stating that she was "born and bred in the purple."
