«u»Ashur «/u»«/b», son of Shem. The «u»Assyrians «/u» traced themselves to the god-ancestor «u»«i»Ashur «/u»«/i» and the city he founded by that name on the «u»Tigris
«/u».

Ashur«/b» («u»Hebrew «/u»: often also transliterated as «b»Asshur«/b» to reflect the pointing of Hebrew letter '' («u»Shin «/u») in the «u»Masoretic text «/u», which doubles the ' '), was the second son of «u»Shem «/u», the son of «u»Noah«/u». Ashur's brothers were «u»Elam «/u», «u»Aram «/u», «u»Arpachshad «/u» and «u»Lud «/u».
The «u»Hebrew «/u» text of «u»Genesis 10:11 «/u» is somewhat ambiguous as to whether it was Ashur himself (eg. as reads the «u»KJV «/u»), or «u»Nimrod «/u» (as in some other English translations) who built the cities of «u»Nineveh «/u», «u»Resen «/u», «u»Rehoboth-Ir «/u» and «u»Calah «/u» in «u»Assyria «/u», since the name «i»Ashur«/i» can refer to either the person or the country.(«u»Genesis 10:8\endash 10 «/u»)
The 1st century Judaeo-Roman historian «u»Flavius Josephus «/u» further gives the following statement: "Ashur lived at the city of Nineve; and named his subjects Assyrians, who became the most fortunate nation, beyond others" («i»Antiquities«/i», i, vi, 4).
