«/b»Milcah daughter of «u»Haran «/u» and the wife of «u»Nahor «/u» in «u»Genesis «/u»
Milcah daughter of Haran was a woman of ancient Mesopotamia and an ancestor of the «u»patriarch «/u» «u»Jacob «/u». Milcah was born to the man Haran, who also had another daughter, «u»Iscah «/u», and a son, «u»Lot «/u». («u»Gen. 11:27, «/u» «u»29. «/u») Milcah's father Haran died in Ur before his father «u»Terah «/u». («u»Gen. 11:28. «/u») Milcah married her uncle «u»Nahor «/u», Haran's brother. («u»Gen. 11:29. «/u»)
Although «u»Leviticus «/u» would later outlaw marriages between aunt and nephew («u»Lev. 18:14, >«/u» «u»20:19 «/u»), it did not rule out marriage between uncle and niece. (See, e.g., «u»Gunther Plaut «/u», «i»The Torah: a Modern Commentary«/i», 881. New York: UAHC, 1981.) The «u»Talmud «/u» approved of a man who married his sister's daughter. (Yevamot 62b-63a.) And in the Talmud, Rabbi Isaac equates Milcah's sister Iscah with «u»Sarah «/u» (then Sarai), who married «u»Abraham «/u» (then Abram), who was also their uncle. (Sanhedrin 69b.) Thus, according to Rabbi Isaac, the two sisters, Milcah and Iscah, married the two brothers, Nahor and Abraham.
Milcah and Nahor had eight children, Uz, «u»Buz «/u», Kemuel, Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and «u»Bethuel «/u». («u»Gen. 22:21. «/u») «u»Targum Jonathan «/u» says that «u»Providence «/u» granted Milcah «u»conception «/u» in the merit of her sister Sarah. (Targum Jonathan to Gen. 22:20.) Nahor also had four children by his «u»concubine «/u», Reumah. («u»Gen. 22:24. «/u»)
Milcah's son Bethuel moved to «u»Padan-aram «/u» and fathered «u»Rebekah «/u». («u»Gen. 22:23; «/u» «u»24:15, «/u» «u»24, «/u» «u»47. «/u») Milcah's granddaughter Rebekah then married Milcah's nephew «u»Isaac «/u» («u»Gen. 24:67; «/u» «u»25:20 «/u»), and gave birth to Jacob («u»Gen. 25:21\endash 26 «/u»), who became «u»Israel «/u». («u»Gen. 32:28;«/u» «u»35:10. «/u» According to a «u»Midrash «/u», Milcah was the forbearer of all the «u»prophets «/u» in the world. (Yalkut Shimoni Balak 22:20.)
