| Notes |
- held in the year 1086 carucates (area of land that could be cultivated by an eight-ox plough team throughout a single year) at Waltcot, Lincolnshire and Yawthorpe, together with others in that part of England by 1115-18; kinship is plausible but has not been provern with son «b»Geoffrey«/b». (Burke's Peerage]. A reported Companion in arms to «b»William the Conqueror«/b», and by some genealogists, Admiral of the fleet of «b»William the Conqueror«/b». An uncle of «b»Gilbert«/b», «b»Foulk d'Anjou«/b» furnished 40 ships for the fleet. Evidently there is some evidence from one of «b»Alan«/b»'s charters granting some land to Kirkstead Abbey was given in the presence of the «b»bishop of Lincoln«/b» and witnessed by «b»Alan«/b»'s brother «b»Gilbert«/b» and his son «b»Geoffrey«/b». Source: B.L., Cotton Mss., Verpasian EXVIII, f. 159v, «b»Gilbert«/b» is identified as his brother by «b»Alan«/b» in Harley Charters 58 H4. There is evidently a witness list of one of «b»Gilberts«/b» charters that names his two sons «b»William«/b» and «b»Walter«/b» and includes «b»Alan«/b», son of Ernise.
