Sir Robert le Brus, 1st Lord Brus was born in July 1243.«sup»4«/sup» He was the son of «u»Sir Robert de Brus, Lord of Annandale «/u» and «u»Isabella de Clare «/u».«sup»2,3«/sup» He married, firstly, «u»Margaret, Countess of Carrick «/u», daughter of «u»Neil, 2nd Earl of Carrick «/u» and «u»Margaret Stewart «/u», in 1271 at «u»Turnberry Castle, Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland «/u», without Royal consent, and so she had to pay a heavy fine.«sup»5«/sup» He married, secondly, «u»Alianore (?) «/u» after 1292.«sup»4«/sup» He died before 4 April 1304.«sup»4«/sup» He was buried at Abbey of Holm Cultram.«sup»4«/sup»
Sir Robert le Brus, 1st Lord Brus was also known as Robert Bruce. On 19 April 1267 he swore fealty to the King and Prince Edward.«sup»6«/sup» As a result of his marriage, Sir Robert le Brus, 1st Lord Brus was styled as «i»Earl of Carrick«/i» in 1271, jure uxoris.«sup»4«/sup» He resigned as Earl of Carrick, in favour of his son on 27 October 1292.«sup»4«/sup» He held the office of Governor of Carlisle Castle in 1295.«sup»7«/sup» He succeeded to the title of «i»Lord of Annandale«/i» before 4 July 1295.«sup»4«/sup» He fought in the Battle of Dunbar on 28 April 1296, with King Edward I.«sup»7«/sup» He was created «i»1st Lord Brus [England by writ]«/i» on 15 March 1297.«sup»1«/sup» He has an extensive biographical entry in the «i»Dictionary of National Biography.«sup»8«/i»«/sup»
