- She was the subject of the colouful episode of Irish History known as the
Rape of Dervorgila. The beautiful Dervorgilla was the lover of the passionate
Dermot King of Leinster. She married Tiernan O'Rourke (one-eyed). In 1152
Dermot was at war with Tiernan so he attackjed and carried off his wife (not
unwillingly). She was taken back a year later by the High King Turlough
O'connor. Within a year she was confined to the convent of Clonmacniose and
nothing more was heard of her.
