Domnall ua Néill«/b» (died 980) («u»English «/u»: «i»Donald grandson of Niall, Donald of Armagh«/i») was «u»High King of Ireland «/u» from 956 to 980.
Domnall was the son of «u»Muirchertach mac Néill «/u», and grandson of «u»Niall Glúndub «/u», a member of the «u»Cenél nEógain «/u» northern «u»Uí Néill «/u». He became co-«u»King of Ailech «/u» with his brother «u»Flaithbertach «/u» on the death of his father in 943. He became High King of Ireland on the death of his maternal cousin «u»Congalach Cnogba «/u» of the southern Uí Néill sept of the «u»Síl nÁedo Sláine «/u».
Domnall is considered to have been an effective ruler who introduced military reforms later credited to «u»Brian Boru «/u». Much of his reign was spent in war against his sister Dúnflaith's husband «u»Amlaíb Cuarán «/u», the «u»King of Dublin «/u». In 980 he abdicated and entered the monastery «u»Armagh «/u» where he died shortly afterwards.
Domnall is the first king to be called "High King of Ireland" (ard-rí Érenn) in his obituary. He was succeeded as High King of Ireland by «u»Máel Sechnaill mac Domnaill «/u» of «u»Clann Cholmáin «/u».
Domnall's children included Muiredach, whose son Lochlann may have been the ancestor of «u»Domnall Ua Lochlainn «/u», and Muirchertach, ancestor of the «u»O'Neills «/u» of «u»Tír Eógain «/u». His grandson «u»Flaithbertach Ua Néill «/u» was King of Ailech and the leading figure among the Uí Néill, certainly from the death of Máel Sechnaill in 1022, if not earlier.
