Muirchertach mac Néill«/b» (died «u»26 February «/u» «u»943 «/u»), called «b»Muirchertach of the Leather Cloaks«/b» («u»Old Irish«/u»: «i»Muirchertach na Cochall Craicinn«/i»), was an «u»Irish «/u»king. He belonged to the «u»Cenél nEógain «/u» sept of the northern «u»Uí Néill «/u» and was «u»King of Ailech «/u».
Muirchertach was the son of «u»Niall Glúndub «/u» and Gormlaith, thus his father and both of his grandfathers\emdash Niall's father «u»Áed Finnliath «/u» and Gormlaith's father «u»Flann Sinna «/u»\emdash had been «u»High King of Ireland «/u». Muirchertach's father was killed in battle against the «u»Norse-Gaels «/u» of Ireland near «u»Dublin «/u» on «u»14 September «/u» «u»919 «/u» along with many other Irish kings. Muirchertach's mother's brother, «u»Donnchad Donn mac Flainn «/u», became the new High King, while Muirchertach became King of Ailech.
Muirchertach married Donnchad's daughter Flann, but relations between the two were not good. Conflict between them is recorded in 927, 929, and 938, but it was not until 941, following Flann's death the year previously, that Muirchertach and Donnchad came to blows. That year Muirchertach raided Mide, «u»Osraige «/u», and «u»Munster «/u», taking the Munster king «u»Cellachán Caisil «/u» hostage as a demonstration of his power, and Donnchad's limited authority.
Muirchertach was a hardened warrior, and finally met his death in battle in 943, as his father had done, fighting against the Norse-Gaels. His obituary in the «u»«i»Annals of Ulster «/u»«/i» calls him "the Hector of the western world", and the "heir designate of Ireland".
Muirchertach's son «u»Domnall ua Néill «/u» was passed over for the succession on Donnchad Donn's death the year after Muirchertach's, but eventually became High King following the death of Donnchad's successor «u»Congalach Cnogba «/u» in 956.
