Niall Glúndub mac Áedo«/b» (d. October 919) was a 10th century Irish king of the «u»Cenél nEógain «/u» and «u»High King of Ireland «/u». While many Irish kin groups were members of the «u»Uí Néill «/u», tracing their descent from «u»Niall of the Nine Hostages «/u» (Niall Noígallach), the «u»O'Neill «/u» take their name from Niall Glúndub rather than the earlier Niall. His mother was Máel Muire, daughter of «u»Kenneth MacAlpin «/u», King of Scots.
Son of «u»Aed Finliath «/u», Niall is first recorded succeeding his brother «u»Domnall mac Áeda «/u» as King of Aileach upon his death in 911. Extending his control to neighboring kingdoms, Niall defeated the Kings of «u»Dál nAraidi «/u» and «u»Ulaid«/u» at the Battles of «u»Glarryford «/u» (in present day «u»County Antrim «/u») and «u»Ballymena «/u» before his defeat by high-king «u»Flann Sinna mac Maíl Sechnaill «/u» of the «u»Clann Cholmáin «/u» Uí Néill at the «u»Battle of Crossakeel «/u» (near present day «u»County Meath «/u»). Following Flann's death in 916, Niall succeeded him as High King of Ireland. It was during his reign in which he would reestablish the «u»Óenach «/u» «u»Tailteann «/u», a traditional gathering of Irish clans.
Opposing the invasion by the «u»Northmen «/u» during the next several years, Niall's forces fought a large battle against a group of Northmen in the summer of 917, ending inconclusively. With the support of the clans of «u»Leth Cuinn «/u» (Northern half of Ireland), the Uí Néill eventually acknowledged his claim to the throne. Despite his continued offensive against the Northmen however, they would continue to settle the area in large numbers, establishing strongholds in Dublin and various ports on the eastern coast. Continuing to wage war against the Northmen, Niall advanced towards into «u»Leinster «/u», supported by the Uí Néill clans, the «u»Airgíalla «/u» and the «u»Ulaid «/u». However, his forces were decimated by the Northmen under «u»Sitric the Blind «/u» as Niall was killed, along with twelve other chieftains, at the «u»Battle of Kilmashoge «/u» (near «u»Rothfarham «/u») in October. He was succeeded as High King by «u»Donnchad Donn mac Flainn «/u», son of Flann Sinna, and as «u»King of Ailech «/u» by his son «u»Muirchertach mac Néill «/u», "the Hector of the Western World".
